IMPACT: Interweaving Mathematics Pedagogy and Content for Teaching

About the Series

Today there are many textbook series representing broadly accepted canonical curricula on mathematics content areas including calculus, number theory, linear algebra, algebra, and discrete mathematics. However, there is no similar series of textbooks dedicated to mathematics education and suitable for teacher education curricula. IMPACT is a new series of advanced textbooks which aims to integrate mathematics content teaching with the broader research and theoretical base of mathematics education.

This integration of mathematics content with topics from research on mathematics learning and teaching will be the leading principle of the series creating a dialogue and a bridge between research, training and practice. Elements from the history and the philosophy of mathematics, as well as curricular issues will be integrated as required.

Members of the Advisory Board will include:-

Abraham Arcavi (Israel), Hugh Burkhardt (UK), Willi Dörfler (Austria), Tommy Dreyfus (Israel), Francesca Ferrara (Italy), Koeno Gravemeijer (The Netherlands), Kyeong Hwa Lee (Korea), Eva Jablonka (Germany), Gabriele Kaiser (Germany), Carolyn Kieran (Canada), Frank Lester (USA), Fou-Lai Lin (Republic of China), Mogens Niss (Denmark), Alan H. Schoenfeld (USA), Michael O. J. Thomas (New Zealand) and Patrick W. Thompson (USA).

Target audience.

The intended audience for the books in the series includes mathematics education researchers, mathematicians who teach future mathematics teachers, mathematics teacher educators more generally, PhD students in mathematics education and teachers and future researchers in MA programs.

Areas covered.

IMPACT was launched with two titles covering core topics in the mathematics curriculum: Algebra and Geometry. Since then, it has added both core topic (Number,  Calculus, Statistics and Probability) as well as core processes (Modelling, Mathematical Literacy).
Forthcoming books include:

Linear Algebra.

Nature and Structure of the books.

The books will focus on fundamental conceptual understanding of the central ideas and relationships of maths. In each section, a broad spectrum of questions of learning and teaching related to important issues such as definitions, proofs, inquiry, representation and problem solving will be considered where they are relevant. Beyond being an integrated presentation of the central ideas of mathematics and their learning and teaching, the volumes will serve as

guides to further resources. Each book will be around 200 printed pages and rich in annotated references for further reading. These references will lead the interested student (or teacher) to the mathematics education research literature; they will also indicate carefully selected books for further deepening the student's mathematical understanding, as well as relevant sources in the history and philosophy of mathematics.
